The Chevrolet Suburban reinvented the concept of family hauling while also serving as a great work companion. Usually the largest of any SUV, it’s also one of the longest-running automotive models ever built. In the early 1970s, manufacturers began creating trucks that were more like cars; they rode better, offered higher-end interior materials, had a large array of amenities and creature comforts, and yet were still built to handle loads of work—a very delicate balance indeed. Chevrolet largely forged the movement, even as far back as the 1950s when it introduced the Cameo Pickup.
The result of a cosmetic body-on restoration, this 1972 Chevrolet Suburban was part of the Don Kizzier Estate and is a truly unique vehicle. Presented in an all-black exterior, including the BF Goodrich Long Trail T/A tires, the Suburban is not only a rare three-door model with two front doors and one back door on the passenger side, but also features very rare factory front and rear air conditioning. Of course, there’s also the cargo door at the rear, but this Suburban is also exemplary of the days of more car influence over truck production with unique embossed white vinyl and plaid bench seating, power steering and power brakes.
Powered by a 402 CI big-block V-8 engine topped with a Rochester 4-barrel carburetor and backed by an overdrive automatic transmission, the Suburban rolls on Chevrolet Rally wheels, and its trailer hitch receiver and six-plug trailer brake and light connection means it’s ready to haul. Inside, the Suburban presents beautifully, with the steering wheel perched atop a tilt steering column and a vintage-look AM/FM radio prepared to entertain passengers. The dash pad is in brilliant shape, with the gauges—including the in-dash tachometer—appearing remarkable with clear lenses; the brightwork and chrome are all exemplary, and the plastics are in excellent condition.
This year would be the final year of the sixth generation of the Suburban, with 1973 ushering in the squared-off style as seen through the end of the 1970s and through the majority of the 1980s. Being a rare three-door model with very rare factory front and rear air conditioning and hailing from the final year of production for the generation, it’s truly one intriguing and unique Suburban.
