During the 1960s, the world learned a thing or two about advertising. It was all about selling a lifestyle. Chevrolet ads were fantastic at conveying the image so many people aspired to live. In particular, its midrange Chevelle with the upgraded Malibu package afforded various amenities and luxuries pushing the car into the upper ranges without breaking the bank; pretty much anyone could afford a Malibu. And this was well worth advertising. The ads depicted youthful people involved in adventures ranging from a day at the beach to cruising an open road. Nicely, too, Malibu wasn’t just a luxuriously appointed midrange car, but also a performance car, if one so opted.
The SS afforded a variety of V-8 engines, an upgraded interior package, specialized wheel covers and specific badges, and it opened the door for a number of select options. This Malibu SS is one of only 7,995 V-8 Malibu SS convertibles built in 1965. Powered by the 283 CI V-8 engine with a 4-speed manual transmission, the convertible is also equipped with power steering, power brakes, a power top with a boot cover, a dash-mounted clock, Delco AM radio and a chrome driver’s mirror. Rolling on belted radial white-stripe tires with the full-size SS-specific wheel covers, the car is complete with a Protect-O-Plate and build sheet.
Presented in Evening Orchid, the Ivory interior matches the convertible top and is comprised of bucket seats, a center console, sun visors, seat belts and all the proper brightwork. Introduced for 1964, the Chevelle was meant to spice up Chevrolet’s small car offerings, the Chevy II losing sales notably to the Ford Falcon, Plymouth Valiant and AMC Rambler. The small car market was hugely competitive, thanks to the number of young customers emerging with substantial buying power, and the Chevelle Malibu was popular among them. Finding a V-8, 4-speed, SS Malibu Convertible is a rare treat indeed.
