The Chevrolet Impala was the bellwether model for Bowtie performance fans in the early 1960s, and this example from the iconic 1963 model year has the power to match that notoriety. After all, it was the final season that GM was “officially” racing, and Junior Johnson took a ‘63 Impala to some big numbers at Daytona while guys like Bill Jenkins and Ronnie Sox were wheeling limited-production stockers on the drag strip.
Despite its ample dimensions (a 119-inch wheelbase beneath a 209-inch body), the Impala proved versatile as a street model as well, and this one has a legendary 409 CI V-8 engine under the hood, complete with dual 4-barrel carburetors, the large air cleaner and W-head chrome valve covers. This is backed by a 4-speed manual transmission, and the spiral shocks are in place on this car. On the outside, this car features Burgundy Metallic exterior paint and SS trim. The hardtop design is further stylized with a body-length side spear, dual rear-mounted antennas, 409 fender callout tags and angled chrome exhaust exits.
The beauty continues into the bright red interior, which has front bucket seats, the full-size console with shift lever, an in-dash design tachometer, seat belts, turned-metal dash trim, an in-dash clock, a radio and an Impala two-spoke steering wheel. The grille design for 1963 is unmistakable, and here it features rubber tips, while the turned-metal accents continue on the side spear with its “IMPALA” lettering and the recessed rear panel. This car wears a set of full-size SS wheel covers and whitewall tires, a fitting complement to the rest of its appearance. This third-generation Impala has always represented a working man’s type of machine, created to make a statement.
Packing multicarb 409 power and the sort of trim level that could make others envious, this car is gorgeous in every way.
