Yes, the man who did “cars for the stars” is responsible for the incredible effort that went in this special 1991 Chevrolet Caprice Barris Custom Wagon. This is a George Barris Kustom conversion that carries the nickname “Nomad’r What,” and some of its changes can immediately be seen. Owned by longtime custom and Hot Rod enthusiast Larry Tarantolo, this project used the classic cues introduced on the 1957 Chevrolet Nomad two-door sedan delivery coupled with enjoyable modern upgrades. Notable are the colorful, matched paint ideas and bodywork blended to match the lines of the more modern Caprice model design. Power here comes from the car’s 5.0L V-8 engine and automatic transmission.
There are also power steering and power brakes on this highly optioned station wagon, as well as air conditioning. The most visible of the 1957 Nomad-style exterior modifications are the rear tail fins that now extend past the side-opening rear door. Using airbrushed graphics to replicate the theme, the overall body wears custom-mixed gold and cream paint, highlighted further with pinstripes, a paint-rendered side spear, the Barris Kustoms front fender tags and lettering for both the car’s name and “Barris Ultra Coach”. A set of mocked lake-racing chrome exhaust pipes run down beneath the rockers.
The interior is a tribute to the classic custom show car era with a mix of gold and black crushed velvet filling the interior. There are front swivel seats and rear bucket seats, plush black carpeting with gold piping, wood-grain interior trim, a french leather-wrapped billet steering wheel on the tilt column, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Sound is via an AM/FM/CD head unit by JVC, and tinted windows were included as well. Final outside cues include Nomad-like ribs on the rear gate and roof, color-matched outside mirrors and a set of early Boyd Coddington billet wheels. When it came to Kustoms, George Barris was a legend.
