The Cadillac Automobile Company was established in 1902, named after French explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe sierra de Cadillac who had founded Detroit in 1701. General Motors (GM) acquired Cadillac in 1909 becoming the prestige division of the corporation and synonymous since with some of the world’s most opulent and sumptuous motor cars. Just 649 Cadillac Seville STS's were sold in the whole of Europe in 2001.
