Buyers had several luxury cars to select from in 1955—often considered a pivotal year in American automobile manufacturing—but nothing truly challenged the latest offerings from Cadillac, a company that achieved record sales during the postwar boom. Offered here is a spectacular AACA Grand National winner, a 1955 Cadillac Series 62 convertible that has been driven only 1,000 miles since its nut-and-bolt restoration was completed. Moreover, the car is very attractively appointed in beautiful Mandan Red with a matched red-and-white interior, giving it the brilliance of color that equals the era of its styling, whether the top is up or down.
The 1955 model line was part of the fourth evolution of the Series 62, featuring innovations and style reworkings that set it apart from other model years even in the fourth generation. Side trim formed upswept angles at the door line to accentuate the bold sheet-metal lines, while a low-profile look came alive thanks in part to the front-end restyling; both facets helped make this version appear quite sleek, despite its sizeable reality. Previously part of a private collection, this car features the 331/250 HP overhead-valve V-8 engine for reliable power, backed up with the 4-speed Hydra-Matic transmission. Exhaust exits through the rear bumper.
The refined factory suspension layout included the coil-sprung independent front suspension and a live rear axle with heavy-duty semi-elliptical leaf springs. Power steering and 4-wheel power hydraulic brakes combine to give pleasure in driving conditions. Both the two-tone red-and-white interior and Ivory top were completed by Jenkins Interiors in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, with further refinements inside consisting of air conditioning, power windows, power seat and Autronic Eye. This example features the windshield washers, a modern innovation at the time, and a pushbutton radio.
The finishing delight of the car’s appearance comes thanks to the Firestone wide whitewall tires and chrome Tru-Spoke wheels. Without peer in many regards, this classic will certainly continue its legacy building into the future.
