For 1977, Cadillac, along with all other GM divisions, would enter the market with the first of the new downsized full-size lineup. Gone were the days of the excessively long, wide and heavy with seemingly unlimited cubes under the hood, replaced by a shorter, narrower body riding on a smaller chassis powered by a smaller engine. In the case of Cadillac, the massive 500 CI V-8 engine gave way to the 425 CI V-8, which would give way to the 368 CI V-8 in 1980. While still comparatively large, it would only produce 145 HP. For some, this simply misrepresented the manner in which Cadillac should be presented, and examples like this 1980 Fleetwood would be crafted.
Custom built by Al Betker of Maximum Torque Specialties, this Fleetwood has been fitted with a 500 CI V-8 from a 1970 Cadillac Eldorado, the first year and most powerful of the 500, with 400 HP. A peek under the hood shows a very factory appearance, the Edelbrock air cleaner system being the most obvious indicator that things aren’t entirely as they used to be. The 500 has been built with TRW forged pistons, a custom rocker assembly, an MTS camshaft, a Melling high-volume oil pump and a double-roller timing gear. To accommodate the boost in power, the rebuilt TH400 automatic transmission has been fitted with a rare LS6 6-bolt torque converter, a B&M kit and a hardened second gear.
Fitted with GM Tow-Pak rear air shocks, the performance package is complete with a Positraction 12-bolt rear end with 2.73:1 gearing, a custom 3-inch dual exhaust system and a front sway bar. Keeping everything cool is a 4-core radiator, a booster fan, an 18×6-inch oil cooler and a 12×12-inch transmission cooler. Featured in the February 2023 issue of “Sports Car Market,” the Fleetwood has been finished in burgundy with cream pinstripes and boasts an Astroroof moonroof snuggled into the burgundy-colored vinyl top.
The overtly factory-appearing exterior is rounded out by Cragar StarWire 15×8-inch chrome wire wheels shod with Vogue Gold Stripe tires, lending the Cadillac a remarkably snazzy appearance. The burgundy leather interior features matching carpeting with plush floormats emblazoned with the Cadillac Crest, an abundance of woodgrain trim and luxurious features such as air conditioning, an AM/FM stereo, the CB radio, power steering, power brakes, power locks, power windows and much more. Complete with an owner’s manual and a folder of photos and information, this 1980 Cadillac Fleetwood presents beautifully and packs a surprise Detroit couldn’t deliver in those years.
