The factory marketing brochure proclaimed, “to those who regard their motor cars as prized possessions,” and the 1966 Cadillac Eldorado convertible offered here certainly qualifies as that. This incredible example of the “Standard of the World” luxury and power has already been treated to a comprehensive restoration and is in unique triple black trim. The 1966 model is unique in other ways as well. This was the final year the Eldorado was rear-wheel-drive, and it was offered only as a convertible, assigned the name Fleetwood Eldorado by the factory. The marque set a sales record of 196,000 units sold that year, with just 2,250 of them being this body design.
Power here comes from the reliable Cadillac 429 CI V-8 engine, with its 4-barrel carburetor, fitted into the engine bay. The TurboHydro automatic transmission backs this up, with an offset-design differential that was engineered specifically to ensure accurate straight-line steering. Cadillac was rightfully proud of the other suspension improvements that made the immense car nimble in driving conditions, and the variable ratio power steering design was new as well. Power brakes with finned drums were standard equipment.
The triple black scheme includes a body done in Sable Black with a black canvas power top with glass rear window and the premium black leather interior with wood-grain accents. The exterior features hard, bold styling, with minimal extra trim, wheel skirting, ELDORADO spelled out on the decklid edge and front fenders, and Cadillac branding seen only via the crest-style emblems. Inside this car is a sport theme, with the front bench featuring a fold-down center armrest. There is air conditioning controls, the power seats, a telescopic steering column with a three-spoke wheel, power windows and AM/FM radio with the power antenna.
Solid provenance on this car, originally sold new in Atlanta, Georgia, includes the original Cadillac broadcast sheet, original owner’s protection plan book with Protect-O-Plate, glovebox owner’s manual, and receipts and photos documenting the restoration. With a finished detailed trunk and whitewall tires, this is a special Eldorado that will indeed remain that “prized possession.”
