Cadillac’s Eldorado first appeared in the 1953 General Motors Motorama as a styling exercise based on the 1952 Series 62 convertible, modified under the direction of GM styling vice president Harley Earl. By the time this 1955 convertible model was built, Cadillac had firmly established the Eldorado as the ultimate dream machine in the Division’s range of luxury liners. The 1955 Eldorado is widely considered one of Harley Earl’s signature designs. The earlier Series 62’s rear styling was replaced with prominent, slender pointed fins positioned above twin bullet tail lights and a sculpted chromed bumper with integrated exhaust outlets.
The massive chromed front grille was bracketed with equally hefty bumperettes that swept up toward the center, ending in the chromed bullets that were a staple of Earl designs. The Eldorado was further defined by its magnificent interior, which featured extensive dash bright trim, a bullet-shaped horn button and special tufted leather seating surfaces exclusive to the model. A car such as this required a powerplant worthy of Cadillac tradition. Engineers chose well, specifying dual inline four-barrel carburetors and the now-classic “Batwing” air cleaner to increase output of the 331 CI V-8 to 270 HP.
Restored at Tii Restorations, Inc. in Huntsville, Tennessee, this 1955 Cadillac Eldorado convertible was professionally refinished in Dark Blue with a White power soft top and striking Red interior finished in correct-pattern leather. In addition to rebuilt carburetors and new power brakes, the car is equipped with power steering, power windows, heater/ventilation, a new trunk kit and wide Whitewall tires on freshly re-plated Gold Sabre wheels that match the Gold Cadillac emblems. This outstanding 1955 Cadillac Eldorado is ready to anchor any collection of the finest automotive design statements of the 1950s.
