The 1950s were all about automotive opulence and excess, and Cadillac led the way with its handsome second-generation Eldorado. In an effort to lower the overall cost for buyers, Cadillac utilized the same, standard body panels as other models, identifying the Eldorado with specific body trim, twin hood ornaments, gold emblems and aluminum panels. An extra feature on the 6267S “E” Eldorado convertible (now called the Biarritz) was a ribbed chrome saddle molding extending from the windshield to the rear window pillar along the beltline.
Model year 1956 would be a low production year for the Eldorado drop-top, with only 2,150 rolling off the Detroit assembly line, this Bahama Blue with white top being one of them. Between the frame rails resides its matching-numbers 365 CI V-8 making 305 HP and a stump-pulling 400 lb-ft of torque in factory configuration. Dual Carter WCFB carburetors and a “batwing” air cleaner feed it fuel, while dual stacked exhausts exit through the chrome bumper. Mated to a 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic gearbox, the engine sends power to the bright Kelsey-Hayes Sabre wheels wrapped in Goodyear wide whitewall tires.
Standard fare included power steering, power drum brakes, a signal-seeking AM radio and a heater/defroster. Inside, the blue and white leather interior features a power, six-way front bench seat, a chrome and white steering wheel with horn blower, power windows and a tinted windshield. Air conditioning with a modern compressor is fitted to keep you cool on hot days, and the factory-installed Autronic Eye will handle automatic switching of the high beams if you desire.
