Cadillac’s Coupe Deville entered its fourth generation with the 1971 model year, ushering in a much smaller fifth-generation Coupe Deville at the end of 1976 for 1977 and marking the end of the big Cadillacs for a number of ensuing years. The fourth-generation Coupe Devilles would be some of the largest production cars ever made, actually setting a record for interior width. Always a popular model, the Coupe Deville continued to rival cars costing much less and served as an aspirational product among various people. This 1976 Cadillac Coupe Deville shows 13,077 miles on the odometer and is finished in Firethorn Iridescent with a white, padded landau top.
Powered by a 500 CI V-8 engine with an automatic transmission, the Cadillac is equipped with a number of convenience accessories including power steering, power brakes, power windows, power locks and cruise control. The dark red interior features climate control, a tilt steering column, a fold-down armrest for the front seat, plush carpeting with carpeted floor mats emblazoned with the Cadillac crest, wood-grain trim and more, and the Cadillac rolls on chrome wire wheels with white-stripe tires. In January 1949, GM hosted the GM Transportation Unlimited Autorama in New York City and Boston.
Between the two locations, roughly 600,000 people attended, getting a glimpse of what was in store from the world’s largest automaker. Cadillac showed seven “special” cars, one of which was called the Coupe Deville and built on a Series Sixty Special chassis. It was well received and available through Cadillac dealerships by late 1949. Luxuriously equipped, they used a pillarless two-door hardtop body, which was a spectacular achievement for the day. Because of the late arrival, just 2,150 were sold; but for 1950, sales just about doubled, and for 1951, more than 10,000 buyers brought home a new Coupe Deville.
Immensely popular with a multitude of age groups and demographics, the Coupe Deville became one of the most successful brand names in automotive history.
