If there was an equivalent to a performance muscle car in the Cadillac line of the 1960s, this beautiful Deville convertible from 1968 would be a contender. The massive two-door package was noted in the period literature as a “rich new dimension in motoring pleasure,” and this example shows an odometer reading of 46,365 miles. For connoisseurs of the brand, 1968 heralded fresh power thanks to the new 472 CI V-8 engine, a massive displacement that quickly proved durable enough that it became the basis for Cadillac standard power for the next nine model seasons, eventually hitting 500 CI.
This 4-barrel package is backed by an automatic transmission, and obviously Cadillac kept it quietly running at all RPM levels through its well-designed exhaust. With 224 inches of Fisher-stamped steel riding on a 129.5-inch wheelbase, the 4,600-pound model had new refinements to the exterior as well, with the restated grille treatment and raised-center decklid being the most prominent. This Deville’s green color is complemented by a power-operated white convertible top, white boot cover and white leather interior.
Of course, the inside was luxuriously appointed with automatic climate control, an AM/FM radio, power windows and locks, an adjustable driver’s mirror, an in-dash clock, chrome pedal trim and the first-ever application of full-size door panel treatment for this marque. The outside’s chrome grille, bumpers and trim are not excessive, with wheel skirts on the back quarter panels and Truespoke wire wheels wearing whitewall tires on all four corners. Cadillac maintained its seventh consecutive year of record sales in 1968, building almost a quarter-million cars. Of those, 18,025 were Deville convertibles like this one.
Nonetheless, today they are not common, and ownership is still a recognized status symbol among aficionados.
