Buicks sales literature for the 1964 Wildcat opened with a pointed question: “Should only strong, steely-nerved men be permitted to drive this ’64 Wildcat?” Like anyone with common sense, Buick’s copywriter already knew the answer to that question, because that was the image being painted for the division’s upstart performer, one with enough power to require sure handling by its driver. Having made the promotion from air cleaner signage to evocative model name, the “Wildcat” moniker represented muscular power in a classy and attractive package, a combination first seen in the Invicta-based 1962 model.

In 1963, the Wildcat became its own separate model, distanced from the Invicta by the addition of bucket seats, a center console and upscale interior detailing. Special exterior trim further separated the Wildcat, which now also featured special badging depicting the stylized head of a wild cat. By 1964, Buick was marketing the Wildcat as “the next best thing to owning a Riviera,” a claim backed up by mature styling that belied the 325 HP and 445 lb-ft of torque packed into Buick’s willing 401 CI high-performance V-8 engine.

Showing a believed-correct 67,052 original miles, the sporty 1964 Wildcat convertible offered here is one of 7,850 built, a beautiful rust-free example headlined by a matching-numbers 401 CI V-8 upgraded with dual 4-barrel carburetors, finned aluminum Buick valve covers and a new Flowmaster exhaust system. The car is liberally optioned with an automatic transmission, factory air conditioning, power steering and brakes, power windows and a power convertible top, and chromed road wheels with new white-stripe radial tires.

Finished in regal Grenada Red paint with a contrasting black top and boot, this Wildcat convertible’s stylish black interior is fitted with the restored original front bucket seats, a center console with shifter and tachometer, and an upgraded Rest-O-Radio. Imposing, powerful and luxurious, this 1964 Wildcat convertible is mid-‘60s Buick style at its finest.
