This range-topping Roadmaster answers the question of what type of car Richard Petty holds in his private collection, as this custom accessorized Roadmaster was once part of The King's personal assemblage. The entire Buick lineup underwent a major upgrade for 1949, and Buick improved on traditional style and introduced the now-famous portholes, or Ventiports, into American automotive design. The 320 CI Fireball Dynaflash Eight was good for 150 HP in Roadmaster trim with a Duomatic spark ignition, 2-barrel downdraft carburetor and hydraulic lifters.
Proven tough in the World War II Buick-built M18 Hellcat tank destroyer, the groundbreaking Dynaflow drive transmission used a five-element torque converter and a planetary gear set for automatic shifts. Four-corner coil springs in an X-type perimeter frame with a semi-floating rear axle and hydraulic drum brakes work together for Roadmaster-level ride and handling. A sun visor tops the black-finished body accented with polished and chrome trim. Four-across Ventiports distinguished the Roadmaster from its three-Ventiport fleet mates, and skirted rear wheelhouses with flared tail lamps lent the Buick factory-custom style.
Wide-swinging doors open to a gray interior well appointed with matchless materials and soft-spring seats. The steering wheel proudly wears a Dynaflow medallion over Buick Pilot-Centered instrumentation and a dash outfitted with the optional Sonomatic pushbutton AM radio that pulls entertainment into the cabin with an external antenna. Front-fender top parking lamps are a nod to prewar Buick styling, and a quartet of fender-mounted horns let everyone know that the Roadmaster and The King were on the move.
The famous Buick gunsight hood ornament and grille guard guide the way for the high-performance luxury touring sedan that rolls on wide steel wheels and wide whitewall tires regally dressed with Buick-script chrome wheel covers.
