This splendid 1942 Buick Roadmaster Sedanet from the Del De Young Collection of vintage Buicks is a rare example as one of 2,475 produced, that figure being less than 3 percent of total Buick production in 1942. Three different body styles were offered in the Series 70 Roadmaster range: a four-door sedan, a convertible coupe and the stylish two-door Sedanet with its increasingly popular fastback “torpedo” styling. GM Styling head Harley Earl’s Y-Job show car of 1938 influenced Buick styling more completely than ever before in 1942, perhaps most notably in the Roadmaster line.
The Y-Job’s waterfall front grille, bullnose hood and sweeping fenders gave 1942 Buicks the “longer, lower, wider” look Earl pursued with a passion throughout his career. Their collective effects were surpassed in the Roadmaster’s “Airfoil” front fenders, which reached back all the way to merge with the rear quarters, establishing a design cue that would define years of Buick styling thereafter.
The 1942 Roadmaster Sedanet featured front vent windows, chromed window surrounds, chromed beltline trim extending rearward from the windshield A-pillars, parallel “speedline” chromed trim strips running the full length of the body sides, lowerable door windows, sliding rear quarter windows and fender skirts all as standard equipment. Riding on a 129-inch wheelbase, the Sedanet offered ample interior space, carrying six passengers on two full-width bench seats with room to spare.
Part of the Del De Young Collection since 2002, the 1942 Buick Roadmaster Sedanet offered here is powered by the Division’s famed 320 CI Fireball Straight Eight OHV engine, which Buick began offering in 1941 with dual compound carburetion, standard equipment in most models, and a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission. Brightly festooned in Salt Lake Green paint, this Buick shows off wide whitewall tires on matching painted steel wheels with chromed trim rings and center caps, and chromed front and rear bumper guards, making it a beautiful example of one of Buick’s most desirable prewar models.
