Introduced for the 1963 model year, the Buick Riviera is rightfully recognised as a watershed of modern automotive design. Its origins are rooted in the Corvette-Thunderbird rivalry of the mid-1950s, during which Ford’s ‘personal luxury car’ soundly outsold the Corvette. The Thunderbird went on to post even higher sales with the enlarged ‘Square Bird’ of 1958–60, a trend that Bill Mitchell, GM’s newly crowned and formidable design chief, did not take lightly.

Mitchell spied a Rolls-Royce while attending the 1959 London Motor Show. Already a devoted enthusiast of Ferraris, he decided to combine his favourite styling cues from both manufacturers in project XP-715, originally conceived as the LaSalle II for Cadillac and subsequently handed over to Buick as the Riviera. It featured aggressive frontal styling with contemporary Ferrari-like cues and distinctive sharp-edged fenders and roofline, largely the creation of Mitchell’s deputy Ned Nickels. The result was a massive success and defined American luxury for a generation.

The handsome Burgundy car shown here was purchased by the current owner’s father and has been part of the family’s personal collection of well-chosen automobiles since. It is almost entirely original, including its well-kept paint and interior, and sports chrome wire wheel covers, narrow whitewall tyres, and Sonomatic radio with rear seat speaker. Recording 53,528 miles at the time of cataloguing, it is certainly one of the nicest all-around Rivieras surviving worldwide and is accompanied by its FIVA Passport.
