Buick’s Riviera has seen myriad changes over its eight generations, but perhaps the most significant Riviera revolution came with the introduction of its sixth generation in 1979, taking the Riviera (and Buick) to front-wheel drive. In doing so, Motor Trend named it Car of the Year, and sales more than doubled. Model year 1985 would be the last year before the eighth generation pushed the Riviera even further down technology road. Originally ordered by Devan Lowe of Devan Lowe Buick in Fort Payne, Alabama, this as-new and unrestored Riviera has accumulated only 70 miles since it was built and has never been sold to a retail customer.
Still wearing its original window sticker, the car also retains its build sheet and dealer inspection checklist. Finished in Dark Blue with a heavily padded Landau top, this Riviera is heavily optioned for the discerning buyer: custom locking wire wheel covers, a Delco-GM graphic stereo equalizer, concert sound speaker system and Astroroof were some of the big ticket items checked when ordered. Powered by a 307 CI Buick V-8 breathing through a 4-barrel carburetor, the 5.0L made 140 HP from the factory, and it’s connected here to a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.
Power meets the pavement through the front steel wheels that are shod in Uniroyal whitewall tires and capped with the aforementioned wire wheel covers. The tan interior features dual, six-way powered seats with electric recline, power windows, locks and electric mirrors. Additional amenities include a power trunk release, Twilight Sentinel (automatic dimming mirrors), rear seat reading lamps and the Grand Touring suspension. Retained by Lowe from new until his passing, this specially ordered Rivera is as new as it gets and ready for the road.
