In 1958, Buick reintroduced the Limited line of ultra-plush, ultra-luxe sedans, coupes and convertibles, selling a little more than 7,000 in the process. Like the highbrow Limiteds before, they rode on the longest wheelbase possible and, for 1958, offered a body that stretched nearly 15-feet in length. In typical Buick fashion, the Limiteds were formal without being stuffy, offering relaxed elegance with a sporty flair. The convertibles cost more than most Cadillacs and showcased a carefree image that exuded taste over wealth. This one truly exemplifies why.
Emerging from an extensive restoration in 2008 by Thunderbirds Etc. in Fort Worth, Texas, this Limited convertible was originally sold new at Galloway Buick in Greensboro, North Carolina. Powered by the 364/300 HP Nailhead V-8 engine with hydraulic lifters and a 4-barrel downdraft carburetor, it is equipped with power steering and power brakes, lending even more ability to enjoy some open-top, carefree motoring. Correct Silver Mist paint coats the body, while a white convertible top keeps the elements out, or lets them in, depending on passenger preference.
Inside, Buick spared no expense ensuring occupants were pampered in formal elegance with a relaxed overtone, largely unmatched by competitors. This one features a red interior with tufted upholstery, polished brightwork, rich carpeting, a tissue dispenser, an AM radio, a clock and air conditioning among other accoutrements. Rolling on wide whitewall tires, chrome wire wheels with spinners add flash to an already swanky ride. Using an abundance of chrome embellishment to standout from the crowd, the Limited Buicks actually offered slight restraint compared to their counterparts.
People always did marvel, however, at the Fashion-Aire Dynastar grille, a highly detailed exercise in complicated yet simple design with 160 chrome squares, which Buick claimed was, “shaped in a design to maximize the amount of reflective light.” The center of the hood is emblazoned with a large “V” emblem, which is echoed atop the fenders. To be sold with service manuals and miscellaneous documentation that includes trade-in paperwork from 1961, this is one Buick Limited convertible that will be hard to match.
