According to the Buick Club of America, this 1972 Buick GSX coupe is No. 32 of only 44 examples produced that year, one of just seven known to exist and one of just four finished at the factory in rare Arctic White, one of only two shades, including Saturn Yellow, reserved exclusively for the GSX package from 1970 through to the end of the Skylark-based GS production in 1972. Like its divisional rivals at GM, Buick was caught off guard by the success of Pontiac’s 1964 GTO and moved immediately to recreate the GTO formula in the Skylark model that shared the same platform with the GTO’s Tempest underpinnings.

General Motors management had also been surprised by Pontiac’s new muscle machine and responded by placing a limit of 400 CI in any intermediate vehicle. Buick had the perfect answer in its 401 CI Wildcat 455 (a reference to that engine’s massive torque output) V-8. The new model was offered in hardtop, pillared coupe and convertible form, all built on the convertible’s strengthened frame to handle the increased power. In 1966, an all-new 400 CI V-8 laid the path for future performance. In 1970, GM Buick created the mighty GSX and its Stage I and II variants.

By 1972, increasing regulations and skyrocketing insurance rates were signaling the end of the first muscle car era, but not before Buick returned one last time with the GSX, again offering three different engine packages including the underrated 350 CI V-8. Manufactured in Flint, Michigan, this rare 1972 GSX has been the beneficiary of a comprehensive top-to-bottom makeover to amazing factory-original presentation, its correct Arctic White paint complemented with a black bucket-seat interior with a center console, front and rear spoilers, twin Ram Air scoops, a hood-mounted tach and a detailed undercarriage with all correct tags and markings.

Its 350 CI engine was rebuilt and dyno-tested to 275.8 HP and a healthy 336.5 lb-ft of torque, plenty enough punch for a genuine muscle car experience in Buick’s classic-era GSX.
