The interstate highway system had yet to be created when this rare 1949 Buick Series 50 Super Estate Station Wagon debuted at Buick dealerships. With huge demand following World War II, the “Estate” design in 1949 featured all-steel turret-top construction with wood paneling overlaid on the upper doors, body panels and curved back, and it was available on both the Roadmaster and the Series 50 Super design, as offered here. This was the first year for Buick’s legendary VariPorts porthole trim on the front fenders, as well as the newly released C-body wheelbase configuration.
On the Buick Super line, this meant a 121-inch wheelbase with a long 209.5-inch overall length on Buick’s notable girder X-frame for wagons. One of 1,847 produced that model year, Super Estate wagons like the one offered here fit into the highest echelon of the Buick lineup below Roadmaster. Underneath the expansive hood is the Fireball-designated straight 8-cylinder engine. A rear-wheel-drive layout, the car was optioned with the Dynaflow automatic transmission.
Wearing a sea-shade hue of green, the hood featured the centered bombsight mascot, while the body is adorned with Super script callouts, lower side trim with forward-mounted rear-fender skins, fender-integrated tail lamps and beautifully designed rear-fender lines. The original factory maple and elm wood was refinished and reinstalled on this car, which was owned by a single family for more than 15 years. The car has more recently been made roadworthy with a replaced radiator, belts and hoses. A new Interstate battery powers the original Delco-Remy 6-volt electrical system. The brake system has been flushed, and its pistons have been replaced.
Inside the interior, new loop carpeting was professionally installed, and the chrome is polished throughout. This sale will include a selection of Buick shop manuals as well. With wooden trim and iconic appointments, this Super Estate wagon should provide satisfaction to its new owner and be a source of continued enjoyment.
