After a four-year, body-off restoration using NOS parts, this 1960 Buick Electra 225 Convertible, one of just 6,746 built that year, emerged finished in Pearl Fawn with a two-tone brown and tan interior and rolling on wide whitewall tires with steel wheels topped by factory Super Deluxe wheel covers. Equipped with a 401/325 HP Wildcat 445 V-8 engine and the Turbine Drive automatic transmission, like this example, the Electra and Electra 225 were introduced for the 1959 model year, supplanting the Roadmaster and Limited as the utmost in Buick’s lineup.
Well equipped, this Electra 225 convertible spoils occupants with a power top, power windows, power steering, the Mirrormagic instrument cluster, a radio with a rear speaker, dual sideview mirrors, two-speed windshield wipers with a washer feature, air conditioning and front bucket seats. Restyled for 1959, Buick gently restyled the 1960 Buicks with VentiPorts, revised quad headlights, redesigned grilles and more to create a car exhibiting a more modern style, yet classically Buick, like the example seen here.
Working hard to regain its market share, Buick offered a radically styled new car for 1959 featuring quad headlights in a slanted position that echoed the direction of the tailfins, a grille comprised of floating, rectangular cubes with recessed surfaces and more. It was a truly drastic departure from the 1958 Buicks but an overall look that would be sustained through all of GM’s full-size cars. At Buick, 1960 ushered in further styling revisions like a grille designed with vertical slats, quad headlights positioned horizontally and other subtle nuances that further pressed Buick into the modern realm.
The Limited, Roadmaster and Special were dropped for 1959 with the Electra 225, Electra and Invicta replacing them, the 225 moniker indicating the overall length of the car.
