If any car exhibits the style of the fifties, it surely is the 1958 Buick Century convertible, highly optioned and finished in a fitting fifties color of Green Mist Metallic. This special order requested the all new Flight-Pitch Dynaflow automatic transmission offered only in the Roadmaster and Limted 1958 models. Likely the only Century built in 1958 with this special transmission. Another very rare option seldom seen on the Century series is the first year offered "Air-Poise" system, the complicated air suspension that totally replaced the coil spring suspension at all four corners.
A silky smooth ride and adjustable ride height was the promise of "Air-Poise" Buick, but the over engineered system was troublesome and many cars were refitted with coil springs after a few frustrating failures. But not so with this Century convertible. George saw to it that the system was always maintained in good order and a recent major service installing NOS airbags have this "Air-Poise" riding on air as originally built. With only 30,800 original miles, this Buick convertible is a true time capsule having had perfect maintenance and secure storage in the same garage it came home to it 1958.
Most all of the miles were put on its first few years and never any in the inclement weather months of Northwest Pennsylvania. The Century convertible is an astonishing example of what we all dream of today in survivor type cars. The ride and drive of the car is consistent with its appearance. Only 2,588 made in 1958.
