Sang Noir: the French translates into English as “Black Blood,” an evocative expression that perfectly portrays the presence of this 2010 Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir, one of a mere 12 issued in this special edition, which was inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s artfully demonstrated affinity for the starry night. “It often seems to me,” he once wrote, “that the night is much more richly colored than the day.” Bugatti took that sentiment to heart in creating the Sang Noir Special Edition, perhaps more so in this particular Veyron than any other in the edition, its skillfully hand-laid carbon-fiber skin visible through a dark, blood-red clear coating that causes the surface to shimmer with almost supernatural depth.
Bugatti has enjoyed an astounding rebirth on the strength of the Veyron’s international success in the years since the Giugiaro-designed EB 16.4 entered production in 2005. Named in honor of Bugatti development engineer, test and race driver Pierre Veyron, who co-drove a Bugatti to victory with Jean-Pierre Wimille in the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Veyron was designed by Jozef Kaban of Volkswagen under the direction of Volkswagen Group Chairman Ferdinand Piech. The design parameters Piech issued in the late 1990s were thought unattainable at the time: 1,000 HP, a top speed exceeding 250 MPH and a 0-60 MPH time in less than 3 seconds.
It took almost six years to realize, but Piech’s vision reached full fruition in the Veyron. The Veyron’s advanced carbon-fiber monocoque structure forms the core, cocooning passengers in a sublimely luxurious environment while serving as the foundation for the world’s fastest automobile. The quad-turbocharged W-16 engine assaults the senses with 1,001 HP and 922 lb-ft of torque; activating the Launch Control system in key-activated Top Speed Mode rockets the car to 60 MPH in 2.48 seconds before powering on to 253 MPH with a twin-clutch 7-speed gearbox driving all four wheels.
Aptly named Normal and Handling Modes are also available, the latter activating the electronic stability and traction control, as well as the hydraulics that lower the car at 220 MPH and deploy the rear wing to create 770 pounds of downforce. Large-diameter carbon-ceramic disc brakes work in conjunction with the rear spoiler (which under braking assumes a more acute angle) to arrest the Veyron’s pace. The reconstituted Bugatti wasted no time establishing the Veyron’s credentials as the world’s pre-eminent supercar before turning to accentuate another facet of the Veyron’s image, indeed a core element in the Bugatti magic: the automobile as exquisite objet d’art.
In that respect, the Bugatti brand has successfully reclaimed the aura that shone brightest in such timeless classics as the Type 18 “Black Bess,” Type 57S Atlanté coupe, and Type 41 Royale. The first phase of this renewed celebration of Bugatti’s artistic legacy was the Legends Series of six special editions, each paying homage to a significant figure in Bugatti history. The second phase, the Special Editions, involved in some cases inviting prominent artists and world-renowned design houses to participate directly in the creative process, with the Veyron as the recipient of their hands-on expression.
The Sang Noir, in contrast, was an in-house creation conceived to explore “darker shades and tonalities,” the most striking result being this stunning jewel that is unique even by Bugatti standards. Showing just 3,401 miles, it is the only one of the 12-car Sang Noir series with a red interior, which in addition to offering uncommonly rich leather upholstery and artful alloy accents provides a bold exclamation point to the car’s arresting exterior finish.
Lavishly appointed with hand-crafted upholstery on almost every surface, the cabin also features a navigation system with OLED display in the rearview mirror, Bluetooth connectivity, Airsystem automated climate control and a Burmester premium sound system. If exclusivity is paramount, this Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir is the one and only answer.
