Following a 16-year hiatus, the M6 made a much-anticipated return to the BMW model lineup with the launch of the E63/E64 6-Series in 2005. Using the same BMW S85 V-10 engine and SMG-III automated manual gearbox as the E60-generation M5, the new M6 was available as both a Coupe (E63) and a convertible (E64), with styling overseen by Karl Elmitt. Interestingly, the E63/E64 M6 offered two engine-power modes, including “P400” with 394 HP and “P500” with a factory-rated 500 HP on tap. Performance was, and remains, electrifying with BMW claiming 0–62 MPH (100 km/h) acceleration in just 4.6 seconds and an electronically limited top end reaching 155 MPH.
Other M6 attributes include a coupe-only carbon fiber roof, a production-model first last used on the E46 M3 CSL, plus thermoplastic quarter panels, aluminium doors, an aluminum hood and a thermoplastic trunk lid. Production of the E63/E64-generation M6 ended in 2011, with this potent BMW performer selling quite strongly over the five-year run, culminating in 9,087 M6 coupes and 5,065 convertibles.
