After a 16-year pause, the long-awaited debut of the next BMW M6 overjoyed BMW’s fiercely loyal buyers and fan base when it was introduced in 2005. Based on BMW’s E63/64 generation 6-Series, the new M6 stands as one of the finest achievements from the renowned engineers at BMW’s famed M GmbH racing division. In addition to its sporting luxury and high-performance character, the new M6 featured the same BMW S85 V-10 powerplant and, initially, the SMG-III automated manual gearbox as the E60-generation M5. Both the coupe (E63) and cabriolet (E64) body styles were offered, with styling overseen by Karl Elmitt. Two engine modes included a 384 HP “P400” setting and a 500 HP “P500” level.
Mighty performance credentials included zero to 62 MPH (100 KPH) acceleration in 4.6 seconds and an electronically limited 155 MPH top speed, with far more on tap depending on the vehicle order. From 2007, a 6-speed manual gearbox became available. Production of the E63/64 generation M6 ended in 2011, with production over its five-year cycle including 9,087 coupes and 5,065 convertibles.
