The BMW M1 is one of the German automaker’s most legendary models, which is saying a lot considering the rest of its lineup. While it was initially developed in the late 1970s as a racing collaboration between Italian automobile manufacturer Lamborghini and BMW, BMW ultimately built the car on its own. The homologated version was sold to the public as the M1, with 399 M1 road cars produced during its 2.5-year run. Apart from its racing accolades, the BMW M1 was the first car to be entirely developed by the automaker’s M division and used a 3.5L M88/1 straight-6 engine with Bosch Motronic fuel injection and Magneti-Marelli ignition system.
With six separate throttle bodies, twin-cams and four valves per cylinder, the engine pushed a whopping 266 HP and 243 lb-ft of torque through a ZF 5-speed manual transmission. With all of this under the hood, the M1 could reach a reported top speed of 165 MPH. This particular example is not only a magnificent specimen because of its inherent rarity, but also because it was previously owned by and built for world-famous F1 driver Niki Lauda as a trophy for winning the 1979 ProCar series.
It sports the rare ProCar-styling front air dam, rear louvers, white 16-inch Campagnolo staggered wheels and prominent “Motorsport Tri-color stripes” hand-painted and signed by German designer and artist Walter Maurer, making it an official “BMW Art Car.”The blue leather interior features power windows, air conditioning, a Becker Europa stereo and an odometer that reads a mere 20,308 kilometers (12,618 miles). Owning a BMW M1 is an achievement of which many automotive enthusiasts merely dream. Owning an M1 that was both awarded to Niki Lauda and is a hand-painted BMW Art Car ascends any such dream.
Despite being one of 399 examples ever made, its heritage and previous ownership transform this car into a true one-of-a-kind that surpasses any admiration one could hope to express.
