Developed and manufactured by the Italian company Iso Autoveicoli SpA, the Isetta made its debut in November 1953 in Turin. Though its cute appearance and frugal fuel economy generated significant interest, this didn’t translate to sales. Iso sold the license to BMW in 1954, which benefited both companies and, some say, helped save the troubled German automaker in the wake of World War II.
BMW completely redesigned the Isetta but retained the charming Italian styling while installing the 247-cubic-centimeter single-cylinder engine from its R25/3 motorcycle. The BMW Isetta, as it became known, first appeared in April 1955, with production running until May 1962. In 1956, the engine was enlarged to 298 cubic centimeters following changes in German legislation. Under BMW’s stewardship, the Isetta became the best-selling single-cylinder car of all time.
This well-preserved BMW Isetta 300 was acquired out of Florida in 2017, though its early history remains unknown. The cheerful color combination of a two-tone blue and white exterior over a red interior perfectly suits the Isetta’s winsome proportions. Under current ownership, it has benefited from nearly $6,000 in mechanical servicing, which included recommissioning the brakes, rebuilding the carburetor, and replacing the fuel tank along with other components.
