The BMW 1 Series made its debut in 2004 as an entry-level, compact car. While offered in a wide variety of body and engine configurations, it perhaps should come as no surprise that the high-performance team at BMW’s M Group would also work their magic on this fun, little rear-wheel drive coupe. In addition to widening the car’s front track by 2.9 inches and its rear by 1.8 inches, BMW’s M Group also shoehorned a twin-turbocharged, inline 6-cylinder engine under the hood. This 3.0L N54-spec engine featured twin, low-pressure turbochargers to limit turbo lag and mated them with an air-to-air intercooler and a direct fuel injection system.
The result was a powerplant that produced 335 HP and 332 lb.-ft. of torque and garnered the 1 Series M Coupe 2011 Car of the Year honors from Evo magazine.
