Facing increasing competition from faster rivals and with development of its ageing six-cylinder engine nearing its end, Rolls-Royce had turned to V8 power as the 1960s approached. Introduced in the autumn of 1959, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and Bentley S2 appeared externally unchanged from their 'Cloud and S-Type predecessors, though the duo's performance was considerably enhanced by the new 6,230cc aluminium-alloy V8 engine. Externally, the new models appeared virtually unchanged, while beneath the skin Rolls-Royce's own four-speed automatic transmission was now the only one on offer, and power steering had been standardised.

In 1962, the V8 engine appeared in improved form in the Bentley S3 and its Rolls-Royce equivalent, the Silver Cloud III, incorporating larger carburettors, a new distributor, and raised compression ratio. There were many other changes made to the S3/Cloud III, the most obvious being the adoption of a four-headlamp lighting arrangement (a nod to American tastes), the absence of sidelights from the wing tops, and a slightly lower radiator shell. Inside, the new models featured revised accommodation with separate front seats and increased room for rear passengers. The last mainstream Bentley to employ the traditional separate chassis, the S3 remained in production until superseded by the unitary construction T-Series in late 1965.

One of only 1,286 Bentley S3s made, this left-hand drive example was supplied new in North American specification to its first owner, one Howard L Aller Jr, who took delivery in the UK on 10th December 1962 and presumably enjoyed a brief touring holiday in his new acquisition before shipping it to the USA ten days later. The accompanying (copy) build sheet also reveals that the Bentley (a 1963 model) was originally finished in Black Pearl with beige interior, and that it left the Crewe factory equipped with electric windows, radio, power aerial, and Sundym glass throughout.

More recently, this car underwent a six-year, no-expense-spared, 'frame off' restoration in Italy. The rebuild included stripping the body back to bare metal; re-upholstering the interior in the original colour; and re-spraying in two-tone Sand over Black Pearl. Reportedly, more than €100,000 was spent on the restoration of the car, which presents in stunning condition. Noteworthy features include sumptuous new lambs' wool carpets, air conditioning, etc. As well as the aforementioned copy build sheet, the car comes with a US title and French import documents proving that EU customs have been paid.

It is rare for a Bentley S3 to benefit from a restoration of this calibre, and 'B4LCN' must surely be one of the best of this rare model on the market today.

• Dazi UE pagati Dovendo affrontare la crescente concorrenza dei rivali, sempre più veloci, e, con lo sviluppo del suo vecchio motore a sei cilindri prossimo alla fine, la Rolls-Royce aveva optato, in previsione degli anni '60, verso il più potente V8. Presentato nell'autunno del 1959, le Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II e le Bentley S2 apparivano esternamente invariate rispetto alle 'Cloud e S-Type', che le avevano precedute.

Internamente, le prestazioni dei due modelli erano, invece, notevolmente migliorate dal nuovo motore V8 in lega di alluminio da 6,230 cc. Esternamente, i nuovi modelli apparivano praticamente immutati, mentre, sotto la pelle, la trasmissione automatica a quattro velocità di Rolls-Royce era ora l'unica disponibile e il servosterzo veniva montato di serie. Nel 1962, il motore V8 apparve in forma migliorata nella Bentley S3 e nella sua equivalente Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III, con carburatori più grandi, un nuovo distributore e un rapporto di compressione aumentato.

Ci sono state molte altre modifiche apportate alle S3/Cloud III, la più ovvia delle quali è stata l'adozione di un impianto di illuminazione a quattro fari (una concessione ai gusti americani), l'assenza di luci di posizione dalla parte superiore dei parafanghi e una mascherina del radiatore leggermente più bassa. Dentro, i nuovi modelli mostravano un arredamento diverso, con i sedili davanti separati e più spazio a disposizione per i passeggeri posteriori. L'ultima Bentley di serie ad impiegare il tradizionale telaio separato, la S3 rimase in produzione fino all'arrivo della Serie-T, con scocca autoportante, alla fine del 1965.

Una delle sole 1286 Bentley S3 realizzate, questo esemplare, con guida a sinistra, è stato venduto nuovo, con specifiche nordamericane, al suo primo proprietario, tal Howard L Aller Jr, che l'aveva ritirata, in Gran Bretagna, il 10 di dicembre del 1962. Probabilmente dopo essersi goduto una breve vacanza itinerante con il suo nuovo acquisto, una decina di giorni dopo Howard la spedisce negli USA.

Il foglio di produzione (di cui copia è disponibile) rivela anche che la Bentley (un modello del 1963) è stata originariamente rifinita in Black Pearl con interni beige, e ha lasciato la fabbrica Crewe dotata di vetri elettrici, radio, antenna elettrica e vetro Sundym. Più di recente, questa vettura è stata sottoposta a un intervento di restauro "frame-off" durato sei anni, effettuato senza limiti di spesa, in Italia. La ricostruzione ho incluso la completa sverniciatura, fino a riportare a nudo il metallo, il rifacimento degli interni con materiale e colore originale e la riverniciatura, bicolore, in Black Pearl. Secondo quanto riferito, sono stati spesi oltre € 100.000 per il restauro della vettura, che, oggi si presenta in condizioni spettacolari.

Tra le caratteristiche degne di nota figurano i sontuosi tappeti di lana di agnello e l'aria condizionata. Oltre al foglio di produzione sopra menzionato, l'auto è dotata di libretto americano e di documenti di importazione francesi che attestano che le tasse di importazione in Europa sono già state pagate. È raro che una Bentley S3 venga restaurata con tale attenzione e "B4LCN" è sicuramente uno dei migliori esemplari di questo raro modello oggi sul mercato.
