As Bonhams is the guarantor of the customs duties and taxes clearance, these motor cars cannot be released to the buyer or his transporter immediately after the sale.
Facing increasing competition from faster rivals and with development of its ageing six-cylinder engine nearing its end, Rolls-Royce turned to V8 power as the 1960s approached. The V8 was, of course, the predominant power unit in Rolls-Royce's most important export market - the USA - so it was only natural that the Crewe firm would study the best American designs - principally those of Chrysler and Cadillac - for inspiration. Introduced in the autumn of 1959, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and Bentley S2 appeared externally unchanged from their 'Cloud and S-Type predecessors, though the duo's performance was considerably enhanced by the new 6,230cc aluminium-alloy V8 engine.
Although wider and shorter than the 'six' it replaced, the new power unit fitted relatively easily within the engine bay, relocation of the steering box from inside to outside of the chassis frame being the most obvious alteration to the previous arrangements. Externally the new models appeared virtually unchanged, while beneath the skin Rolls-Royce's own four-speed automatic transmission was now the only one on offer and power steering had been standardised. Immensely successful both at home and abroad, the Silver Cloud II and Bentley S2 remained in production until the autumn of 1962.
In October 1957, long-wheelbase versions of the S1 and its Silver Cloud sibling had been made available, with bodies closely based on the standard offering, and this option was carried over to the successor S2 and 'Cloud II. Four inches longer in the wheelbase and usually fitted out with an internal division, these bodyshells were extended by Rolls-Royce's in-house coachbuilder Park Ward (soon to become H J Mulliner, Park Ward) at its London works and finished off at Crewe. A mere 57 long-wheelbase Bentley S2s were made between 1959 and 1962 compared with 299 of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II version.
The ultimate in style and luxury in its day, this long-wheelbase Bentley S2 saloon was supplied new to Rolls-Royce Inc of New York, USA and retailed via J S Inskip Inc, also of New York. It first owner was a Mrs Robert Blumenthal of New York City. Accompanying copy chassis cards reveal that 'LLBB17' was ordered with an internal division and left the factory finished in Black Pearl with beige interior trim. Other specification highlights included electric windows; electric aerial; Marchal type headlamps; and plain Sundym glass throughout.
At time of cataloguing no further information concerning the Bentley's history had come to light prior to its acquisition by the current vendor from Heritage Classics of Beverly Hills, California in May 2007. A copy of Heritage Classics' Export Purchase Order is on file and the car also comes with a (copy) Alabama title, no original registration document will be provided with the car. Nowadays, the car is finished in dark green, still with a beige interior and is fitted with modern rear-view mirrors. Please note this motor car is subject to import tax if remaining in the EU and, as it has been on static display for a number of years, will require recommissioning for road use.
