Powered by a 4,566cc inlet-over-exhaust straight-six engine allied to either a four-speed manual or automatic transmission, the R-type was a surprisingly strong performer, able to exceed 100mph. Praised by the contemporary motoring press for its high-speed handling and well-appointed interior, the model remained in production until 1955, by which time 2,320 had been made.
First issued with the Manchester registration number 'OVU 200' on 22nd April 1954, chassis number 'B73WG' remained in single-family custodianship for its first 67 years. The first owner was a major manufacturer of clothing fasteners, and the Bentley remained in their family until it was sold in 2021.
The R-Type was purchased by our vendor, the late John Lunn, in May 2022. John, a prominent and well-known dealer in special Bentley and Rolls-Royce motor cars almost all of his life, bought this example to use and enjoy. Sadly his enjoyment of the R-Type would be short lived. The car was the subject of some cosmetic work during his ownership (no bills available) and the front and rear carpets were renewed; the rest of the interior remains largely original.
Recommissioning is advised following a period off the road in storage. Accompanying documentation consists of a V5C Registration Certificate, sundry paperwork and a fresh MoT. A rare opportunity to acquire a fine Bentley R-Type that has enjoyed the benefit of single family ownership for almost its entire life.
