On April 23, 2012, at the Beijing Motor Show, legendary British sports-car manufacturer Aston Martin announced the creation of a special line of handcrafted Virage automobiles aimed at the growing and increasingly prosperous Chinese market. Known as the “Year of the Dragon 88” series, this Chinese-market car was built in a limited edition of just 88 cars, paying homage to the Chinese Year of the Dragon that began on January 20, 2012, the mightiest of the Chinese zodiac signs, and the number 88, which in the Chinese system of Feng Shui signifies great prosperity.
Offered across the DBS Volante, Virage Coupe and V8 Vantage S Coupe lines, each Aston Martin Dragon 88 is a handcrafted work of art with many exclusive features, beginning with a choice of Volcano Red, Amethyst Red or Champagne Gold paint, and a choice of Spicy Red, Deep Purple or Chancellor Red leather inside, all with Sahara Tan stitching and Piano Black accent inserts with intricate gold inlays. The most striking interior feature is the dragon embroidery on the seat backs that replicate one of the dragons on the “Nine-Dragon Wall” in Beihai Park, Beijing.
Outside, the Dragon 88 is further distinguished by its 24-karat gold winged Aston Martin badges, magnesium-silver front grille insert and 10-spoke silver-painted diamond-turned alloy wheels wearing Pirelli P-Zero tires. The only known example in the United States, this Aston Martin Virage Dragon 88 in Amethyst Red with a Spicy Red interior packs Aston Martin’s potent naturally aspirated 6.0L V-12 rated at 490 HP and 420 lb-ft of torque, and is backed by a Touchtronic II 6-speed automatic transmission and limited-slip differential with traction control.
