Hot Rodders—and the likes of Carroll Shelby in particular—knew well what happy outcomes could be achieved by squeezing big engines into small packages, and that’s exactly what Aston Martin aimed to do by implanting its 5.9L V-12 into the chassis of the compact V-8 Vantage to create the ultimate performance Aston Martin road car. But there was much more to it than that. Evolved from the race-inspired Vantage RS prototype, bringing the project to fruition involved radically upgrading and altering virtually every element of the V8 Vantage hull, from the suspension and brakes to aerodynamics and cooling and lightweight carbon fiber components in a much revised and altogether more muscular body.
The result, brought to market in 2009 was Aston Martin’s fastest-ever road car. With a curb weight of 3,737 pounds, the V12 Vantage hit 62 MPH (100 km/h) in 4.2 seconds and topped out at 190 MPH. Meanwhile, the company also strived to ensure the cabin and driving experience delivered the comfort, luxury and appointments that Aston Martin owners demand. That’s what you got in 2011 when the 6-speed manual V12 Vantage coupe was sold new with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $176,995.
Driver-oriented features of the specification include a 3.71:1 rear end, dynamic stability and traction control, emergency brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, along with 4-wheel carbon ceramic ABS disc brakes. Further amenities include navigation, AM/FM audio, cruise control, the auto-dimming rear-view mirror, cruise control and powered folding mirrors. The Aston Martin Carbon Black exterior gives a stealthy appearance that somewhat harmonizes the numerous body vents, apertures and aero fitments. This theme is taken over into the interior, which is upholstered in Obsidian Black leather with Alcantara seat inserts.
When the prototype took shape in 2008, Aston Martin was unsure whether to translate it into production—that was until it was deluged by entreaties from enthusiast drivers, to whom the V-12 Vantage coupe owes its existence.
