There’s no doubt that without the drive and vision of legendary New York car importer Max Hoffman the landscape of true icon models would be far sparser. It was Hoffman who persuaded Mercedes-Benz to create a street version of the 300SL Gullwing (and then the 300SL roadster), pushed BMW to produce the 507 roadster and served as the driving force behind the legendary Porsche 356 Speedster. In other words, he knew what the American market demanded and pushed European manufacturers to new heights in their efforts to meet the needs of spirited and well-heeled American driving enthusiasts.
And it’s in that very same spirit that Aston Martin unveiled the DB AR1 Zagato roadster at the 2003 Los Angeles Auto Show. Yet the AR1—or American Roadster to give it its full name—was way more exclusive than the above-mentioned forbears; unlike its predecessors, it was produced only for the U.S. market and with a production run of just 99, less than one tenth of either the Gullwing or 300SL roadster. Harkening back to the immortal DB4 GT Zagato, Aston Martin once again commissioned the Italian carrozzeria to create a hand-crafted machine that evoked and amplified the original in styling and presence, with the powerful haunches and slatted grille among the unmistakable signature notes.
As for performance, the DB AR1 Zagato’s 435 HP 48-valve 5.9L GT-spec version of the Vanquish V12 shot the roadster to 60 MPH in 4.9 seconds on its way to a max of 186 MPH. This 2003 example in Tungsten Silver with a diamond-pleated biscuit leather interior is No. 37 of the 99 built. Back in 2003, that very limited production was taken up by connoisseurs within three months, with eight put aside for European Aston aficionados. However, in the intervening years, several more have been acquired by European collections.
In short, the chances of seeing another DB AR1 Zagato coming towards you are far slimmer than encountering a Gullwing, 300SL Roadster or even the achingly rare BMW 507 roadster which, with a production run of 253, is common by comparison.
