Automotive collector and aficionado Colin Comer is often associated with the muscle-car segment of the hobby, though he has long described himself as first and foremost a die-hard “Alfisti” at heart. He bought his first Alfa Romeo nearly 30 years ago, which he still owns to this day, and in the intervening years, he has built the Alfa Romeo portion of his collection to nine Alfas total, a number he states as being “one that at many times was much higher!” As a 25-plus year member of the Alfa Romeo Owner’s Club, Colin also served as an AROC Technical Advisor for more than a decade and has long specialized in the service and restoration of Alfa Romeos at his business.
No surprise, then, that this 1985 Alfa Romeo Spider Graduate caught his attention when its second owner offered it for sale earlier in 2017. A life-long Utah and Arizona car, its first owner kept it until 2002, when he gifted it to the second owner, an Alfa Romeo Club officer. Comer appreciates the car for its combination of classic Alfa goodness and choice technical advances. “I've always loved these early Bosch-injected Spiders, and my favorites are the 1985 Graduates.
The Graduate was a stripped-down version true to the original square-tail Spiders, the Bosch fuel and ignition systems are amazingly bulletproof and add great performance, and 1985 was the last year of the cool dash with individual pods for the tachometer and speedometer.” Produced in the ultra-rare combination of black with a burgundy interior, this rust- and damage-free example has received a single repaint and a new top over the original interior.
Factory equipped with air conditioning and 4-wheel disc brakes, its legendary Bosch fuel-injected 2.0L DOHC all-aluminum inline-4 engine and crisp 5-speed gearbox perform fantastically after a recent mechanical servicing, and the car is accompanied by a comprehensive folder of maintenance receipts, original books and documented ownership history. Comer’s message to its next happy owner: “I bought this Graduate (for its) amazing condition, great history and perfect color combination.
