This 1985 Alfa Romeo Spider Graduate is an impressively preserved 19,000-mile car with only one previous owner. A first-year model, the 1985 Graduate represented the third iteration of the iconic Alfa Romeo Spider in a simpler, more “pure” package. Allegedly inspired by the 1967 film “The Graduate,” starring Dustin Hoffman, this namesake car is actually quite a step up from Hoffman’s Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider driven in the movie, having benefited from two decades of technological advancements since the movie car’s creation. Even with those unseen upgrades lurking beneath its sheet metal, classic good looks still abound on this Monza Red Spider Graduate.
The classic twin-pod gauge cluster, chrome outside mirrors and other early features that would be phased out in 1986 combine here with Bosch electronic fuel injection and engine management, variable cam timing and other mechanical advances that together create a classically styled but easy-to-enjoy collector-grade car.
Equipped with a 2.0L DOHC all-aluminum inline 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed transmission, this car was sold new in Greensboro, North Carolina, on July 5, 1985, and was recently treated to a professional service including new top-line Michelin tires and an alignment, machined brake rotors, repacked wheel bearings, brake and clutch hydraulic flushing, general tuning and a complete replacement of all fluids. This car has led a pampered life thus far and features an immaculate original body, engine compartment, interior and simply stunning chassis, all adding to its virtually as-new appearance.
It also retains a plethora of original documentation, as one would expect from a meticulously cared-for low-mile car. Items to accompany its sale include the original window sticker, Alfa Romeo Pre-Delivery Inspection form, North Carolina DMV Inspection Receipt, odometer mileage statement, transport receipt and even the receipt from the original check used to purchase the car in 1985.
