Alfa Romeo’s long-lived 6C model made its debut in 1925. It was designed by the brilliant engineer Vittorio Jano and first appeared with 1,487-cubic centimetre displacement and a single overhead camshaft. Twin cams came in 1928, and they were joined by a 1,750-cubic centimetre sibling a year later. That year, the 6C 1750 won every racing event it entered. A 1,900-cubic centimetre version came in 1933, and a 2,300-cubic centimetre version came the next year. The final variant, the 2500, of which this car is an excellent example, was introduced in 1938, and it remained in production until 1952. The 6C 2500 was one of the most expensive cars of its time, and its clientele included numerous celebrity luminaries, with this example being no exception.

As Alfa’s post-war cars followed pre-war practices, so did the coachwork of Turin’s Pinin Farina, although the art deco obsession faded somewhat. Thus, post-war bodies omitted much of the brightwork, which allowed for their handsome lines to make their own statement. Such is the nature of this beautiful 6C 2500, which is the most desirable short-wheelbase model with the most powerful engine, known as the SS.

This SS Cabriolet was completed on 19 May 1949 and then sold to Vittorio Meneghelli, a prominent Italian expatriate brush manufacturer, artist, socialite, and prominent collector of African art. Meneghelli took delivery of the car in Venice, Italy, and brought it back to Capetown, South Africa, on behalf of the actual first owner, Edwardo Lupini, who was the owner of a prosperous marble business. In an interview with later owner Oliver Collins, Mr Lupini’s son remembered the car well, saying that they would take it on the 1,000-kilometre trip to Johannesburg once a month and that it was the finest highway cruiser in a stable that also included numerous early Ferraris.

In addition to frequent long-distance touring, it is also believed to have taken part in sports car racing at Kyalami, in Midrand, South Africa. The Kyalami circuit has been the site of numerous Formula One races and grand prix since the early 1960s. It was apparently for competition purposes that the car was converted to a floor-mounted gear change.

In the 1980s, the car was imported into North America. After being owned by well-known Alfiste Oliver Collins, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, it passed through a succession of owners in the north eastern United States, and one of whom had restoration work done to the car by Michael Lemire in Vermont. In 2001, it was sold to a prominent Southern California collector and Alfa enthusiast. In 2012, it was imported to the United Kingdom, where it was registered with the age-related number 462YUJ, with documentation for which accompanying the car. It has never been separated from its matching-numbers engine.

Despite being an older restoration, the car presents beautifully. The red leather interior shows minimal use, and the paintwork and brightwork exhibit no significant flaws, as with the Bakelite switchgear and smart Veglia instruments within. The car runs on 17-inch Borrani aluminium wheels, date-coded April 1954, and Firestone tyres. A new canvas bonnet was installed at the time of restoration, along with a matching cover.

The engine bay was detailed as part of the restoration. Correct cloth-wrapped spark plug wires are employed, along with proper hose clamps and air cleaners. The engine and driveline show some use, but they are generally clean and dry. All correct identification plates are in place and unaltered. The car reportedly drives well, and the gearbox shifts smoothly and accurately.

Included with the car is a voluminous history file, with letters to and from the Meneghelli family, period photos, an owner’s manual, and photographic documentation of the engine work. This Alfa Romeo is a certain invitee to many prestigious concours d’elegance, and it is also eligible for nearly all vintage tours and events on every continent. All 6C 2500 Alfa Romeo Cabriolets are rare, but this one, with its unique history and savoir faire, stands out above all the rest as the ideal Riviera car.
