Produced at 105 copies Extremely rare model Signature of a great coachbuilder No registration title Chassis n° 856088 Presented in 1961, the Alfa Romeo 2600 was an evolution of the 2000 version. It was a top-of-the-range model available at the time in Sedan, Sprint (coupe designed by Bertone) and Spider (Touring) versions. All of them received a new in-line 6-cylinder engine of 2584cc with electric fuel pump (two twin-barrel carburetors on the Sedan and three twin-barrel carburetors on the Sprint and Spider) in order to be able to face the competition. The Alfa Romeo 2600 will also be the last car to have the in-line 6-cylinder engine with two camshafts.

The coachbuilder Zagato was also quick to work on this new base and in November 1962 presented his vision of the 2600 Coupé. This prototype had completely innovative lines compared to the Alfa Romeo offering. The Italian maestro then developed his project and a few months later presented four new prototypes with refined bodywork. Thus, from 1965 onwards, the 2600 Sprint Zagato (SZ) version will be available from Alfa Romeo since it will join the manufacturer’s range. With the exception of the bodywork, the engine and chassis remain identical to the basic version. The 2600 SZ is powered by a 2,584 cc in-line 6-cylinder engine fed by three Solex carburetors for a total power of 145 hp.

Benefiting from perfected aerodynamics, the 2600 SZ shows better performances with a maximum speed of 210 km/h (that is to say 17 km/h better compared to the 2600 Sprint) and takes 30,9 seconds to cover 1 000 m from a standing start. Despite this performance gain and Zagato’s signature styling, production of the model remained confidential. The manufacturing process of the 2600 SZ remained traditional and synonymous with a high price. Thus, from 1965 to 1967, only 105 examples of the Alfa Romeo 2600 SZ were produced, including the 5 prototypes mentioned above. Hence the extreme rarity of this very exclusive model, which is now very much sought after on the market.

The example we present was produced on the 14th of December 1966 and delivered new in its original color Grigio Chiaro Metallizzato, black leatherette interior, on the 31st of December 1966 to Franco De Angelis. The documents that accompany this 2600 SZ mention its subsequent sale on the 8th of July 1978 to Giuseppe Leone and then on the 6th of May 1987 to Antonio Briganti. This car will then join the Anna-Lisa collection on the 1st July 2019. We have a complete file (photos and invoices) attesting that this car has undergone a complete restoration completed in June 1992.

Both in terms of its bodywork with disassembly of its body and full painting in its current color, as well as its mechanics with a complete overhaul of its in-line 6-cylinder engine at the renowned Conrero. In this very rare Zagato configuration, the Sprint 2600 offers the sporty character that the other, more bourgeois versions do not have. This model embodies the end of the prestige Alfa Romeo made according to the desires of sporty and wealthy customers.
