2027 Rivian R1S and R1T Get Smarter Updates

Rivian is giving its R1S SUV and R1T pickup a series of upgrades for 2027, focusing on comfort, off-road capability, and a simpler trim lineup. The R1S can now be ordered with second-row captain’s chairs, while the R1T gains a new 20-inch all-season wheel-and-tire package designed to improve trail performance without giving up too much highway range.

The R1S’s new captain’s chairs replace the standard second-row bench and reduce seating capacity from seven to six. In return, passengers get heated seats, individual armrests, and integrated pop-out cupholders. The option starts at $1,500 on Premium and Performance trims and can cost as much as $4,500 with the Slate Sky Signature interior.

For the R1T, the new 20-inch package combines dedicated wheels with Goodyear all-season tires. It comes standard on the Premium trim and is available at no additional cost on Performance models. Rivian estimates up to 300 miles of EPA range for the Premium, 380 miles for the Premium Long Range, and 348 miles for the Performance. Could this be the sweet spot for buyers who want both trail capability and everyday usability?

Rivian is also simplifying its confusing motor-based naming system. The former Dual-Motor model is now called Premium, while the Tri-Motor becomes Performance. The flagship Quad keeps its name. Interior themes have also been renamed to match the newer R2: Slate Sky Signature, Black Mountain Signature, and Ocean Coast Signature.

Despite the updates, buyers will face a significant price increase. The 2027 R1S starts at $85,885, while the R1T begins at $81,885—$7,000 more than last year. Are the added features enough to justify the higher price? And does the simplified lineup make the R1 family easier to understand?
