Practicality was always a byword for the Willys brand, from their little prewar coupes to the millions of military-ordered Jeeps that helped win World War II, but this Deluxe 685 Station Wagon from 1953 is more than simple utility. First and foremost, it is already recognized in the collector car hobby for its level of excellence and original equipment. This includes judged provenances such as AACA First Junior, Senior and Preservation Awards, and a nomination for the National Award in 2009. It scored Best in Class at the 2007 Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance and still sets the bar high regarding the correct restoration of an original wagon.
The rebuilt original F161 Hurricane 6-cylinder engine still powers this classic, backed by a T-96 3-speed transmission with overdrive. The exterior is refinished in the original Sabor Rouge Maroon color, especially attractive with the correct cane-webbing decals on the side panel inserts. The smattering of body chrome used by Willys on this model has been polished or redone, and there is also new glass and weatherstripping, and it features the front bumper guard as well. Within the body is a new original style red and gray interior. This includes the restored dash and instruments, factory radio that has had an AM/FM conversion done by Antique Automobile Radio Co., and factory heater.
Also equipped with the rare 7th-passenger jump seat and the interior spare mount, this vehicle conveys the sense of what this purchase meant to its original buyers, whether for home, club or multi-purpose use. Riding on steel wheels painted in light yellow with wheel trim rings and Willys-logo hubcaps, the Jeep DNA that bled into the postwar Willys model line is clearly evident. Add to that this special car’s honored AACA status, and you have an opportunity not simply to own a unique example of this not-oft-seen model, but one of the best.
