In the 1930s, when Volkswagen put Germany on wheels with the Type I, or Beetle as it’s more popularly known, there may have been little thought about what it would inspire. However, Ben Pon, a Volkswagen importer from Holland, thought the company needed to produce a small van, a vehicle of higher capacity that could serve companies, municipalities and families more effectively than the Type I. Volkswagen liked the idea and designed a boxy body to affix to the chassis of the Type I.

It’s been argued that the Type II, or Bus as it’s often called, is one of the most influential vehicles of all times, and while it was often criticized for its underpowered nature, some owners have taken matters into their own hands to quash that ridicule. Such is the case with this 1966 Volkswagen Type II Custom powered by a Cadillac-sourced 509 CI V-8 engine conversion and an automatic transmission, which pushes power through an Eldorado rear end and exhales through custom dual exhaust ports. Nestled deeply into the engine bay, the engine breathes via aircraft-style dual air scoops and is well dressed with painted valve covers, an aluminum intake and chrome air cleaner.

To ensure cool runnings, dual radiators were installed, and to accommodate the monstrous mill and its cooling system, the rear was widened 6 inches. Tremendously dramatic air intake scoops were installed on each side as well. Finished in two-tone red and black, the classic Bus features brightwork such as twin sideview mirrors, chrome bumpers with guards and the beltline that leads to the iconic V-nose that’s so desirable to enthusiasts. Chrome DUB Wheels are wrapped with blackwall tires, while disc brakes and a custom torsion bar front end have been installed to aid in handling and harnessing the extra power.

The black interior features a front center console and Porsche 914 front bucket seats, while a bench second row matches and features racing belts. Custom black carpeting has been laid throughout, and custom pleated door panels line the interior. Custom VDO gauges have been installed along with a wood-grain steering wheel, custom heater and defroster, and a Sony radio.
