W.W. Shepherd owned Caterpillar dealerships in the greater Los Angeles area and special-ordered this 1957 Volkswagen Type II 23-Window Deluxe Bus in Commercial Yellow paint, Code SK 6488, to reflect and support his businesses. Built on December 21, 1956, it left the factory on January 31, 1957, bound for the USA. It must have been quite a sight back in the day, cruising the streets of L.A. or parked among the heavy equipment at one of his dealerships. Today, the bus retains most of its original paint and underwent a seven-year sympathetic preservation restoration, which was completed in 2007.
Just 500 miles have been applied to the 1200cc/30 HP air-cooled flat 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual transmission since the rebuild, with the current owner having held it for 25 years. The bus features the sliding fabric sunroof, the original tan interior, rubber floormats and the M 020 MPH speedometer. The original idea for the multi-window bus is said to have come from a Swiss tour company that wanted its guests to enjoy unobstructed views of the Alps while being driven around. Applied to the most luxurious Samba Bus, the multi-window concept was initially available with 23 windows, but later, a 21-window version was introduced.
Complete with the sliding cloth sunroof, the open-air sensation remains one of the most incredible motoring experiences of any vehicle.
