Finished in two-tone Aetna Blue and white with white bumpers, this 1966 Volkswagen Type II 21-Window Bus presents stunningly thanks to a meticulous restoration. Powered by a rebuilt 1600cc flat 4-cylinder engine and a 4-speed manual transmission with a rebuilt transaxle, the body is fitted with a sliding rag top, which, along with the expansive use of glass, helps the interior seem much more open. The underbody has been painted and presents well. Beset with a selection of new and restored parts and components including a new wiring harness, new headliner, restored steering, restored suspension and restored brakes, this Type II Volkswagen shows off its meticulous restoration well.
The gray interior features a VDO speedometer, an AM radio, rubber mats and more. Rolling on wide whitewall tires with white steel wheels and polished dome hubcaps, the overall look is a time warp back to the ’60s. When Volkswagen launched the Type II Bus, it likely had no idea how popular it would become or how many hats it would wear. It was said to have been thought up by Ben Pon, the Dutch Volkswagen importer who sketched the idea of the Type II when he saw a makeshift parts mover created from a Type 1 chassis. While the sketch is dated April 23, 1947, it wasn’t until 1949 when the first Bus, or Type II, rolled off the assembly line.
