This one-of-a-kind 1958 Volkswagen Transporter has recently undergone a rotisserie restoration that was so meticulous it literally looks like it could have rolled off of the assembly line yesterday. The exterior paint and body work was completed in the last year while the balance of work was finished in the last few months. The Transporter model debuted for Volkswagen at the Geneva Auto Show in 1949 and shared the Beetle’s venerable air-cooled engine. A multi-purpose model available in multiple formats—including an ambulance, police wagon, firetruck and camper to name a few—the Transporter sold more than 9 million units during its production lifetime.
This particular Transporter has been restored and upgraded to the desirable 23-window configuration, featuring eight panorama windows, a German canvas ragtop sunroof and safari-style pop-out front and rear windows. Conceived by Volkswagen as a tour vehicle for people who wanted to discover the Alps, the additional windows increased visibility all around and were welcome by the many sightseers who had the opportunity to ride in one of these vehicles. This particular Transporter is finished in a two-tone turquoise and white exterior and features chrome stripping, window surrounds, headlight surrounds, door handles, wheel covers, painted original steel wheels and painted bumpers.
On the interior, the Transport follows the same general styling theme and features colorful turquoise upholstery contrasted with gray carpeting. Interior amenities include a tachometer, passenger fans, chrome luggage tie-downs and adjustable and locking windows. Looking pristine is a 1300cc air-cooled flat 4-cylinder engine that is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission with a floor-mounted shifter. This machine has only been driven 20 miles since the completion of its restoration and appears to be in immaculate condition. The Transporter is just right for taking the scenic route through any type of wilderness you can imagine.
