The Volkswagen bus is an icon of industrial automotive design, and this 1978 Westfalia Camper is a shining example of classic German engineering and execution. Westfalia was the official builder of Volkswagen Camper Conversions that were sold through the VW dealership network worldwide or could be ordered stateside and picked up in Germany through the Tourist Delivery Program. The base Westfalia package consisted of birch plywood interior panels, cabinetry for storage, ice box, sink, water storage, electrical hook-up provisions, sofa Z-bed and a screened venetian-blind jalousie window.
The enhanced package additionally included a pop-top with canvas side screens, a child sleeping cot in the front cabin, swing table and stove with refrigerator. This Volkswagen Westfalia Camper Bus has both the base and enhanced packages, and it sleeps five. Fresh out of a bare-metal restoration, the body is painted in the factory-correct two-tone color combination of Dakota Beige and white with new window and body seals. The original interior still retains its green with Tartan Plaid seating surfaces, green door panels and wood cabinetry.
Originally powered by a 2.0L horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine that produced 67 HP, the original engine has been upgraded to a 2.7L horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine with an elevated output of 95 HP—a 41 percent power gain. The new engine—sourced from a Corvair—is mated to the Volkswagen automatic transmission that first became available in model-year 1978. Based on their popularity and collector-car status, many Volkswagen buses are now being used for short cruises and cars shows instead of weekend camping.
However, this 1978 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper Bus with its higher-performance engine and automatic transmission could easily serve as both a true camper RV or as a weekend beach cruiser.
