Emerging from an eight-year restoration, this Volkswagen Westafalia Camper Bus has a sweet note of authenticity and correctness to it. Initially sold in California, one of the hottest markets for Volkswagens since their arrival in the U.S., the Westfalia Camper Bus was hugely popular to those seeking an easygoing daily driver, family hauler and budget-friendly travel vehicle. Today, they’re hugely sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike for a variety of reasons. Since the restoration, it’s traveled roughly 50 miles on the rebuilt 1,600cc engine fed by a Bocar carburetor and backed by a 4-speed manual transmission.

Inside, the Bus is beautifully appointed to match the red-and-white exterior. The black camera-case finish dashboard is superb with wonderful gauges and switches; new white vinyl upholstery covers the front seats and paneling all around. A dinette set hosts a white tabletop lined with a rubberized edge and cloth seats upholstered in a red color that matches the exterior of the van. The wooden cabinetry below the seats is remarkable and lends a soft, homey look to the interior.

The center side windows are of the louvered variety, perfect for allowing ample airflow that keeps interior temperatures mild, while cute, flower-pattern curtains provide some privacy and a whimsical, period-correct reminder of the days gone by. The pop-up camper roof extends beautifully and is a fantastic throwback to a simpler way of vacationing. Rolling on white-painted steel wheels with chrome hubcaps all wrapped with Hankook Tires, the wheels match the bumpers and camper top, while red covers the rest of the body. This is a perfect way to enjoy classic camping, or bring something unique to the local car culture.

It’s no secret that Volkswagen built a well-earned reputation as a simple, efficient vehicle for the masses, largely putting the world on wheels, but unique specialty vehicles such as the Westfalia Campers remind that Volkswagen aimed to serve its customers in more ways than just efficient transportation—it often sought to serve their passions.
