Originally derived from the Type 2 Campervan sold right up until relatively recently, the conversions, at the time, where subcontracted to Westfalia-Werke in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Germany. Supplied with a standard air-cooled, flat-four engine to the rear connected to a rear-wheel drive gearbox, the standard equipment included various foldout seat arrangements for sleeping, laminated plywood cabinetry for storage, a sink, water storage and pump as well as an electrical hook-up. Also included were windows with Venetian blinds and, usually, a laminated folding table. Additionally, there were a whole range of camping options available throughout the years from pull out awnings to pop-tops and everything in between.
This rust-free Californian import was repainted in 2018 to include ‘no expense spared‘ upgrades to the entire camper that were undertaken by specialists in the field. The engine is a rebuilt 1600cc unit and coupled to a freshly rebuilt gearbox. It also features a CSP front disc brake conversion with a remote brake servo. The suspension has been lowered and rides smoothly with the help of new Bilstein shock absorbers all round. The EMPI polished five-spoke wheels add to the overall appeal of this polished example.
There are LED lights throughout with additional charming details to the interior such as a full wicker under-dash shelf stretching the full width of the cabin, Coco mats to the floor, a wood rimmed steering wheel, a CSP quick gear shifter and a classic-style auxiliary music player.
The central cabin has a factory Rock & roll bed, oak-style flooring, additional storage facilities, original-style Westfalia curtains, a front child hammock bed and a spare wheel by the rear shelf. The final flourish, of course, are the American-spec bumper overriders and a full length, wooden slatted roof rack. This represents that holiday option that is both extremely handsome and entirely usable for both British and continental touring.
