A rather diverse 'box of bits', the skill of friends Robin Butler and John Meredith and lots of trial and error resulted in this beautiful, late-1930s Tipo 158 Alfetta-style Monoposto special. Whilst this little red racer may look every inch like a tribute or homage to those pre-war Alfa Romeo Voiturettes - it’s not. A change of plans regarding build projects left our vendor, talented auto engineer and ex-racer Robin Butler, with a surplus 1970s Triumph 2-litre six in his workshop. Over many cups of coffee with friends discussing what they could do with the engine, a plan, several plans really, emerged to build a vintage or PVT racer in the style of the Alfa 158.

It wasn’t a clear plan, just a feeling that developed as they started assembling bits and laying them out and seeing what emerged. It’s a long story with many twists and turns, and is told in an excellent article in. Complete Kit Car. a copy of which is with the car. The serendipitous amalgam of unlikely bedfellows included the Triumph engine,. fast road cam, 4-speed non-overdrive gearbox,. a ladder chassis sourced in Somerset, Triumph independent front suspension,. MGA rear axle running 4.2:1, adjustable coil overs all round,. MGA wire wheels, bespoke Aluminium bodywork over tube created in Ledbury, Alfa Romeo Rosso paint, Brooklands aero screens, Moto-Lita wheel and much more.

It has an MSUK Passport and has r. un twice at Prescott and once at Curborough. The owner (and builder) is now approaching 85 and unfortunately his arthritis is preventing him from having more fun in the car. Please get in touch if you need more info or come along to our Bicester Sale and have a look.
