  • Fitted with a Triumph TR6 2.5-litre six-cylinder engine
  • Featured in Classic Performance & Retro Magazine (2012)
  • Present ownership since October 2023

The reference to a TR6 engine above is not a mistake, for this particular GT6 has been fitted with the 2.5-litre 150bhp fuel-injected six of the biggest 'TR', a move that many Triumph enthusiasts believe should have been made by the factory. 'TVD 764H' had been loaned to the magazine by Cambridgeshire based Triumph specialists TRGB, who had the car up for sale. The article appeared in

CPRM

's August 2012 edition (photocopy on file).

A fastback Spitfire powered by the 2000 saloon's 2.0-litre six, the GT6 arrived in October 1966. Like the Spitfire, the GT6 inherited what was essentially the Herald's chassis and running gear, which had already proved capable of handling six-cylinder power in the Vitesse sports saloon. A comfortable ride was considered vital for the all-important North American market so the GT6 inherited the Herald/Spitfire's softly sprung rear swing-axle, though the latter would be superseded by lower wishbones on the Mark 2. At the same time the engine received a power boost courtesy of the TR5 cylinder head and 'hotter' camshaft, maximum output increasing from 95 to 104bhp.

Produced only for the 1973 season, the restyled, last-of-the-line Mark 3 adopted the contemporary Spitfire's simpler 'swing spring' rear suspension. Fast (100mph-plus) and stylish, the GT6 well deserved its 'mini E-Type' sobriquet and today is one of the most sought after of post-war Triumph sports cars.

This GT6 was purchased by the late owner in October 2023 for £26,000 from Bicester Sportscars (he used to own a GT6 back in 1980). Sadly, he had become too ill to drive it. Four previous owners are known: Heather Baker, London NW1 (2011); Brian Moll, Milton Keynes (2015); George Rieger, East Grinstead (2018); and Peter Tierney, Emsworth (2021). Documentation on file includes a V5C Registration Certificate and bills for works undertaken during 2023 by JWORX Classic of Bourton-on-the-Water totalling £2,500. The car also comes with Brooklands Books' book on the GT6 1966-1974 and an owner's handbook (Mark 3).
