With an odometer showing less than 17,000 miles, this 1987 Suzuki Samurai presents in highly original condition. A study in white, the factory paint is contrasted by a black soft top and interior. The gray steering wheel matches the gray dashboard, which hosts a battery of gauges and a modern Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo system head unit. Equipped with bucket seats and new carpeting, the interior is as simple an affair as the exterior, as dictated by Suzuki, which was looking to produce a fun, no-frills, go-almost-anywhere, beach-combing trail finder with a low entry price.

Powered by a 1.3L inline 4-cylinder engine and a 5-speed manual transmission, the 4-wheel drive vehicle has been garage kept and retains its intact emissions equipment, which is very rare for Samurais. Originally sold in California, it features a rear-mounted spare tire, power brakes and was recently serviced and tuned up. The road Suzuki took to develop the Samurai was a long one. It started in the 1960s, when the company looked into building a kei-class, off-road vehicle. In Japan, the kei-class is a very valuable and exceedingly competitive market of diminutive vehicles that sidestep certain tax and road requirements. Very affordable, they are attractive to a wide number of customers.

In order to develop a kei-class, off-road vehicle, the company bought a Steyr-Puch Haflinger as a starting point. Purchasing the bankrupt Japanese automaker Hope Motor Company proved much more fruitful, as Hope had already been producing the HopeStar ON360, a tiny, kei-class off-roader. By 1970, having studied the Steyr-Puch and the HopeStar, Suzuki introduced its first kei off-roader, the LJ10, or Light Jeep 10. Marketed soon after as the Jimny, part of the world would get to know Suzuki’s little off-roader as the Samurai. By 2018, nearly 3 million had been sold in 194 countries.
